How Do I Love Thee, Y&R, Let Me Count The Ways 7 comments

Young and the Restless

My all time favorite soap opera, The Young and The Restless is turning 40 today. We’ll be the same age. How apropos. I previously wrote about the fabulous makeover that Y&R has undergone. I’m still loving it. Recent episodes have opened with a recap from one of the cast members about their time on the show. Last Thursday and Friday’s episodes were pre-empted due to March Madness. Madness is right, last Wednesday’s show ended with one helluva cliffhanger and I had to wait until 11:00 a.m. CST yesterday to see what would happen.

Spoiler alert! Y&R has been doing a fantastic job the last few weeks honoring their 40th anniversary. Victor and Nikki Newman were married for the umpteenth time while a henchman planted a bomb in their house. Victor’s black sheep son, Adam Newman, took a bullet meant for dear old dad. Tony Todd of Candyman fame appeared as newcomers Valerie and Tyler’s dad imprisoned for killing their mother. General Hospital veteran Steve Burton who joined the cast two months ago has made Y&R home with his first shirtless scene. He cemented it by hooking up with Melissa Claire Egan’s character Chelsea Newman.

Y&R has always told intriguing stories and that’s why it’s #1. With the cancellation of so many other great daytime soaps, I am thrilled that this one has stood the test of time. The writing has remained impeccable even after the passing of creator Bill Bell. The brilliant cast and suspenseful storylines are what keep me tuned in. Here are some of my favorite twists from the last 40 years.

1. The death of Cassie Newman
2. The real life recasting of Adam Newman with Michael Muhney
3. Cane Ashby is not the real Phillip Chancellor III because the real Phillip faked his death
4. The redemption of Michael Baldwin
5. Plastic surgeon carves “KILLER” onto David Kimble’s forehead

Honorable Mention: Introducing the world to Shemar Moore

Though I too have enjoyed many years of Y&L I think at some point these soaps just have to stop.
I don’t watch any soap opera anymore because they just take too much time and involvement. The Spanish soaps are 6 months tops lol and still that is too long.
Glad you are happy about Shemar he is a nice candy indeed 🙂

I love, LOVE Y&R, and I get so angry that I can't catch it when it airs every day because of work. I remember all of these story lines that you named! I'm so sad to see one of my favorite couples (Micheal and Lauren) right now on a downward spiral though! I've read somewhere that this is going to turn Micheal back down a dark path. We'll see! Stopping in from SITS!

If SoapNet is available in your area, you should check it out. I record Y&R daily on SoapNet because it airs the actual show despite any pre-emptions from my local station or an outage due to bad weather. I'm looking forward to Michael Baldwin walking on the bad side again. 🙂

It was creative. The character David Kimble wanted his face to be redone like David Hasselhoff which was tongue in cheek since Hasselhoff was on Y&R in the early years. But the plastic surgeon got the last laugh.
