1. Shrink (iOS and Android)

What is it?

This app has changed quite a bit since I first started using it almost a year ago. You log in to the rebate app with your Facebook account or e-mail address to earn points or cash for specific products you purchased/plan to purchase. Simply locate the offer on the app that matches your product, scan the product barcode, and upload your receipt.

Which forms of payment do you receive?

PayPal cash and Venmo. The cash redemption threshold is $20. You can also use accumulated points to redeem cash and various offers specific to the brands.

What I have earned with this app

In almost a year, I have earned $3.25. However, new opportunities to earn have begun for me due to recent changes on the app.

Pros

Your receipts are processed quickly. You receive a $1 bonus when you sign up and complete your profile. You can earn $2 per friend you refer with your referral code. By doing small tasks like reading text for a featured brand, answering a question or watching a quick video, you can earn additional points or cash. You also earn points by sharing your referral link on social media platforms.

Cons

The majority of the brands that are offered for rebates are not available in my local stores or I don’t buy them. However, there are often offers available for non-specific brand items like produce, dairy, or receipts of any value.

Shrink Tips

Hang on to your receipts until you receive confirmation that they have been successfully processed. Be aware of the expiration dates on the products because they vary.

2. Shopkick (iOS and Android)

What is it?

This is a fun reward app to use. I like the four ways that you can earn points (called Kicks):

1. Simply walk into a participating store like Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s Club, JCPenney, Target etc.

2. Scan products at participating stores.

3. Link your Visa and MasterCard to the app and make purchases at participating stores.

4. Refer friends to use the app.

Which forms of payment do you receive?

A minimum of 75 kicks will begin to qualify you for gift cards to a large variety of retailers and venues like Old Navy, Starbucks, Shutterfly, The Cheesecake Factory, Hyatt, etc. You can also use your Kicks to get big prizes like Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, high end electronics, and other luxury items.

What I have earned with this app

In 14 months, I have earned over 1900 Kicks. I redeemed 1250 of them for a $5 Starbucks gift card. It sure came in handy one day for me.

Pros

This app is very user friendly. You can get a view of all of the Kicks available to you at each participating store in one glance. You can receive alerts when you are nearing a store that has Kicks available. There is often an increase in Kicks at certain stores on a particular day. The app also shows you current sales and deals at participating stores.

Cons

You can only link Visa and MasterCards to the app. I tend to shop with American Express quite a bit, so I lose out on that perk some times. There are instances where the app does not recognize that you are in a participating store for the Walk-in Kicks. It will prompt you to go to the entrance of the store to get a better signal.

Shopkick Tips

Open the app on your mobile device as you approach the store.

3. Snap by Groupon (iOS and Android)

What is it?

I just started using this app this week thanks to Jessica at Adventures of a Cavemom. It is very similar to Ibotta (which was featured in Part 1 of this series) and Shrink. You receive cash back on specific brands of grocery items when you upload a receipt that includes them. Although it is affiliated with Groupon, you can not access Snap through the Groupon app or site.

Which forms of payment do you receive?

Once you reach the $20 redemption threshold, you can request a check. Payments are typically distributed in 2 weeks.

What I have earned with this app

As I stated previously, I just downloaded the app this week. So, no earnings yet.

Pros

Most of the items for cash back offers can come from any store (details are stated when it must be a specific retailer) as long as it matches the product offer. The app allows you to redeem multiple offers on one receipt. Sometimes there are opportunities to redeem an offer more than once. You earn $1.00 for each referral that signs up and uploads a receipt.

Cons

Your receipt must be uploaded within 2 days of purchase. I read in their FAQs that if you do not redeem any offers for 12 consecutive months, you may be charged a monthly account maintenance fee. However, it appears that it will be taken from any earnings that you have accrued.

Snap by Groupon Tips

Keep an eye on the promoted offers because their expiration dates vary.
