Why a cannabis qualification could be the best step for your career
The cannabis industry in the US is continuing to grow rapidly, with more and more states moving towards legalization of the plant for both medical and recreational purposes. In turn, this is providing a huge variety of job opportunities for those with the relevant knowledge and qualifications. It’s not only those directly involved in the cultivation or dispensing of marijuana either. There are a wealth of jobs being created in sectors indirectly related to cannabis, such as marketing, accounting, legal services, and the media.
If all of this opportunity is sparking your interest, studying for a cannabis-related qualification could be ideal for you. Here’s an overview to help you decide:
Do I have to go back to college?
Not if you don’t want to! Although there are a wide variety of on-campus programs for all levels and specialisms, there are also plenty of courses that you can study virtually. The nice thing about getting your dispensary certification online is that you can study with an institution based anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own home. This means that even if you have a career and a family, you can still get a new qualification without disrupting your home life. Online learning enables you to study at a time and place that suits you and your lifestyle, without sacrificing the quality of education.
What kind of cannabis qualifications are there?
For a relatively new industry, there are a surprising variety of cannabis-related courses available to choose from. The one that’s right for you will depend on a number of factors, such as your previous experience and qualifications and the type of career you are interested in. For example, if you are a clinician you could train in the use of medical cannabis in order to be able to prescribe it to your patients. Those who would like a more hands-on role might prefer to study the cultivation of the plant, and there are also business and law courses that allow those with relevant qualifications to enhance their skills by focusing on the marijuana industry.
If you’re currently in college, there may be individual modules related to cannabis that you can take as part of your wider degree. These include topics such as cannabis journalism, the business of marijuana, and regulating cannabis. The cannabis field involves such a large number of industries that the variety of jobs and qualifications available are impressively varied, so you should easily be able to find the right one for you.
Is a cannabis qualification worth it?
The statistics certainly suggest that the cannabis industry is a lucrative field to get a qualification in. Reports indicate that it’s the fastest-growing industry in America, meaning now is the perfect time to take advantage of the increasing job opportunities in the field. If you focus on adapting your existing experience and expertise to the cannabis industry, you might find that adding a relevant professional development certification to your resume isn’t too time-consuming or expensive either.

This is such wonderful information. My nephew got his qualifications to work in a dispensary in Pennsylvania a few years ago and he absolutely loves his job. His younger brother is following his footsteps and is in the process of establishing his own cannabis business. It is a rapidly growing field, for sure, and a very helpful one, in my opinion!
