It’s our constant battle, right? Perfection may not exist, but we believe you can get pretty close to it with the right system in place. A clean and healthy house is refreshing to come home to at the end of the day, and an oasis from a sometimes unhealthy world. Let’s look at a few tips for a clean and healthy home, so you can get started on creating your safe haven.
Get Rid of Moisture
Moisture leads to mold. Sometimes in the winter, we need to use a humidifier to get a break from the dryness, but during the warm months, place a dehumidifier in areas where you feel the humidity. Typically, you’ll need one in the basement. Mold not only ruins basement storage but it’s also dangerous, especially for those with allergies.
For regular cleaning, make yourself a schedule and stick to it. A minute-by-minute schedule isn’t necessary. Simply jot down the days of the week you’ll get a cleaning chore done, or better yet, delegate cleaning jobs to members of the family. Here’s what a loose schedule could look like:
- Monday: bathrooms
- Wednesday: sweep and vacuum
- Friday: wipe down kitchen counters, sink, and appliances
- Saturday: sweep and mop floors
Everyone’s house and schedule will look different, but this gives you an idea. Pick up messes daily to help out with cleaning.
Keep It Bug-Free
If you live in an area with a decent bug population, such as a warm and muggy area, consider monthly pest control. For any area of the country, keep food cleaned up and trash empty to help avoid a parade of ants or other bugs from marching through your home.
Breathe Fresh Air
A healthy home has clean air, so change the HVAC filter regularly. Do your best to stay on top of dust and mold in your home, so you can enjoy excellent air quality. Air ducts, filters, and even your carpet and rugs are hanging on to dust, just waiting to release it into your home’s air.
Part of a healthy home is a safe home. Every six months, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Keep cleaning supplies and anything poisonous out of reach of children. Make sure area rugs have something underneath them to keep them from sliding, so no one slips.
Maintain It All
To go along with our thoughts about scheduling, maintain your home’s regular cleaning schedule and also create reminders for the bigger ticket items, such as HVAC maintenance twice a year, duct cleaning, gutter cleaning, and roof checks.
Our homes are our happy places. Make yours even happier as you implement our tips for a clean and healthy home.
