Remote work has incredible benefits. Along with those benefits come the distractions of home that threaten to make us less productive and efficient. We’ve got seven tips for working efficiently from home to help you enjoy the time while also having a successful career.
Scheduling is essential when working from home, so you’ll stay on track. Make your schedule as loose or strict as you prefer. Let’s look at a list of regular daytime events to schedule so that you finish them:
- Office time/work hours
- Family time
- Help kids with schoolwork
This is a general list of what many people add to a schedule. Everyone’s life is different. You may also have kids at home who do school remotely or a baby who needs some attention. It can all get done when scheduled.
Make the Rules
This applies to those working in a home when other members of the family are also home. Set boundaries so that everyone is successful. Boundaries may look something like this:
- Hang a sign on the door so no one enters the home office
- Everyone has a chore for the day to help pitch in
- Everyone eats together
Create a set of rules that work well for you and your family. Make sure to discuss them so everyone understands.
Take Your Breaks
Possibly the number one complaint of those working remotely is forgetting to take breaks. There’s something about working from home that causes employees to feel like they shouldn’t step away. Sadly, that isn’t healthy, and everyone needs a break to get out of work mode and come back refreshed. Set your alarm if it helps remind you it’s time for a break.
If you can, choose a designated workspace for yourself where you can get organized and find some quiet when you need to work.
Sometimes, when we choose to work at the kitchen counter or dining room table, the distractions are too much.
Time To Socialize
If your company offers chat rooms and virtual get-togethers for remote employees to stay in touch, you should take advantage of it.
It’s too easy to get locked into our own worlds as we do everything from home. Humans are social creatures, and it’s important to stay connected, especially with coworkers. Our coworkers understand what our days are like and can also motivate us.
Time away from the job is essential for productivity. An exhausted employee is not a useful one.
Ask questions if you are unsure how sick days and paid time off work with your company. You most likely have both and should use each one when necessary. Your company and family need you healthy and refreshed.
Remember, just because we’re home doesn’t mean rest is unnecessary.
